BEING PERSECUTED AND DRAWING NEAR TO CHRIST
Recently my children and I have been suffering a persecution for our faith in Jesus Christ. It is nothing compared to our brothers and sisters in Christ -- as in China, Vietnam and other countries, where they are tortured and murdered for their faith in Christ Jesus -- but it is persecution nonetheless.
I have been very protective of my children and asked them to pray for people who wish to bring us such harm. I have not identified by name who these persecutors are, but recently my daughter Charissa had what I believe was an insight from the Holy Spirit that brought on an important question in my walk with the Lord.
My daughter was pressing for names of the people who were bringing such persecution. I refused to tell her informing only that we should pray for people of that nature. She in her own determined fashion continued to ask me and press me for her desired answer. When she found her effort was leading her nowhere in her quest for the desired answer, she stopped, looked me right in my eyes and with a sigh said, "Daddy, whoever they are, they're not a Christian." I couldn't help but be drawn back and at the same time pleasantly surprised by her answer. Her answer touched my heart that I had taught them enough (she is only 6 years old) about the Bible and what a Christian's actions and reactions are to be and that she was able to "get it" at such an early age.
This statement brought up a question in my mind later that day: "What is a Christian?" or "How does one recognize a Christian?"
In these last days before Jesus' return, I often look for other Christians to be with and to fellowship with. I have come across some who called themselves Christians but their fruit said otherwise. I began to study what a Christian meant scriptually. I came across one of the scriptures I often use as a memory verse for my children: (John 13:35). Jesus said "they shall know you are my disciples by the love that you show one another." I also found other verses that reflect where we are in our times and what people will really love: 2Timothy 3:1-8 "But mark this: there will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, and not lovers of the good. Treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God -- having a form of godliness but denying its power."
Too many people today call themselves "Christian" but their actions speak otherwise. These "Christians" often bring persecution upon the true disciples of Christ because they lack knowledge of Biblical truth. They have brought a theology of worldly wisdom to the Church. Often they quote famous psychologists or world renown philosophers or, worse, misquote scripture. This lacking in truth results in their lust for things not of the Lord Jesus but to self satisfaction and power, greed and control. They miss out on the leading of the Holy Spirit and His presence and so lose many blessings because of their self-made theology. In this, they actually do harm towards the ones who do follow Christ Jesus because what they do impacts upon all who name themselves "Christians."
Because of these people who are those I call "Pretend Christians," and also organizations that use the word "Christian" in their business name or show a sign of a fish as an indicator that somehow they represent Christ, they have in reality confused not only true followers of Christ but confused the world too because of their philosophies of confusion. The world looks at Christians and often wonders what is the difference between us and them. Again, this is often because of those who hold one foot in the world and the other foot in the "church." I can honestly say that, in the past, I have been confused as well by their words and actions.
Regarding being persecuted from those who bring this onto disciples of Christ, we should expect/endure it (Matthew 5:12), know we are blessed (Matthew 5:10) because of it, and move us in faith to Christ in it (1Cor.4:12).
So, know that persecution for our faith is coming. It is not only from ungodly rulers as you may suppose but from our own household -- whether church or literally our own family, it's coming. Jesus warned us of this in Matthew 10:34-35. I believe the hostility that we have towards us is definitely in relation to the soon-coming return of our Lord Jesus Christ. One does not have to look far to see how cruel our world has become especially in relation to or towards Christianity. The world enjoys sin and desires sin. So, when the heart of someone who does not truly know Christ as Lord and Savior acts out sinfully, we should not act surprised whatsoever. We should instead speak up to what sin really is: rebellion towards God's love and mercy and the best for our lives.
Moral relativism is in, Christianity is out. Anyone who stands for Christ is automatically marked as an enemy of the world. The world invents ways to persecute us Christians and to dismiss our claims that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life. Anyway the world can manipulate their worldly governments to destroy us or our families, our loved ones, they will.
What we are feeling here in the United States and Canada in the form of persecution again is nothing compared to what our fellow believers in Christ in other countries have had to endure. To my knowledge, very few people here in North America above the Mexican border have been murdered for their faith in Christ Jesus . . . yet. A sifting, though, is transpiring. I believe God is sifting His people. He is allowing persecution of the saints to see who are really His, and who are of the world. Through this, God is also allowing wonderful opportunities to show love, compassion and help towards the Body Of Christ. People are being given a chance to truly repent of their sins, to show others that they really do belong to Christ. Marriages, families and whole communities can be restored to Christ if we are open to accepting this persecution as a sifting process. We should be grateful for this opportunity with a repentant heart and open to running towards Him and grabbing onto His promises to live a Spirit filled life rather than our own.
Lastly, my friends, times are not going to get better. I am not a "Dooms-dayer" but Jesus gave us signs to look for for His second coming. I have not found anything yet to be fulfilled in the scriptures preventing His return. I believe the Anti-Christ is here living on earth and waiting for the appointed time to take over for a season as pointed out in scripture. I plead with you if you have never given your heart to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, please take advantage of this opportunity today. On our web site you can click on "Plan Of Salvation" to find out more. For those of you who have already come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, be encouraged -- our Lord is drawing near to you as you draw near to Him. Please don't wander as sheep sometimes wander. Do not allow yourself to be picked off by a wolf. There are so many wolves waiting to take advantage of you or to harm you. To others, I implore you -- please gather around one another, do not let other believers in Christ go it alone. They need our loving support. Find time, energy and resources to encourage, be with and bless those right here in North America who are being persecuted. Go beyond "I will pray for you." Show them you truly care because the next round of sifting and persecution may involve you.
We here at Global Family Outreach Ministry care about you. We want to hear from you. Again, if you do not truly know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, please accept Him today. If you are a disciple of Christ, please drop us a line. Please also prayerfully consider how you can be a part of this Global Family Outreach for Christ through prayer and support.
Thank you and Many Blessings!
Paul, Eric, Charissa and Jirah.
